Vacation at Zanzibar

To end our Africa trip, we head to Zanzibar, which we have heard so much about. We pass by Kilimanjaro, which is an impressive sight.

We start in the north in Nungwi and are unfortunately quickly disappointed. It may be because we are used to traveling around Asia that we were disappointed but neither the city nor the beach lived up to what we expected. It was very difficult to find good restaurants or other things to do. In the north it is perfectly fine to swim on the beach. The tide does not affect much. From here we mostly hang out on the beach and relax. We also get a visit from a monkey who moves in with us. He is very sweet and likes to help me work on the computer.

We also take the opportunity to take a boat trip and snorkel a bit. It’s beautiful but we’ve seen better but few things beat a day at sea.
After the northern part, we head down to Söder. Here we find a fantastic place ”Promised land lodge” which is secluded but in a magical environment. Here, too, we take a boat trip where we go out to a reef and a fantastic dinner is served. We get the opportunity to snorkel and swim in wonderful turquoise water. However, the journey home was a challenge. It blew up to a gale and the waves beat over the boat the whole trip in. It’s incredible how much you can freeze in 30 degree heat and it’s one of the few times I’ve actually looked for a life jacket. In the end, however, we arrive safely. Unfortunately, the southern part is very affected by the tide so it was clever to swim from the beach, but the hotel had a pool so it worked out well.

We then head to the east coast and Stone Town. This is a cozy town that, if you are still in Zanzibar, you must not miss it. Take a guided tour and listen to its history. It is very interesting. Everything from the slave trade to the spice trade. You can also take a boat trip and go out and meet the giant tortoises on Prison Island. They were gifted to Zanzibar many years ago and trot calmly around the island. Also take the opportunity to visit the Freddie Mercury museum, which is located in the house he lived in as a child.

Our last time in Zanzibar takes us to the east coast. Here we find a cozy place right on the beach, but unfortunately there is nothing around the village, but it will be breakfast, lunch and dinner at the resort. Works perfectly fine, but for those of us who are used to exploring on our own, it gets a little restless. If you are looking for a sun holiday at a resort, it is a perfectly fine destination, but you can expect to share the beach with some cows.
