Straddling the Equator – A Sweet Farewell from Quito

As our journey slowly draws to a close, we find ourselves in Quito, nestled high in the Andes and known for being one of the world’s most scenic capital cities. For our last night, we’ve chosen to stay at a hotel near the airport—partly for convenience, but also for safety, as there’s been a bit of unrest in the city recently. Still, that didn’t stop us from venturing out for one final memory.

After a slightly bumpy and adventurous taxi ride—the kind that has you laughing nervously and gripping the seat a little tighter than usual—we arrived at a place that’s long held a special fascination: La Mitad del Mundo, the “Middle of the World.”

There’s something whimsical and grounding about standing with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern. The atmosphere was relaxed, the sun gentle, and the air filled with quiet excitement. We explored the museum, took the classic photos straddling the yellow equator line, and wandered through small shops with charming local crafts. It wasn’t grand or flashy—it was just lovely.

It was the perfect way to end this trip.

After all the grand landscapes, ancient ruins, wild encounters, and ocean breezes, this small, peaceful moment at the center of the world felt like a pause—a chance to reflect on everything we’ve seen, felt, and shared.

Tomorrow, we’ll board our flight home, our hearts heavy with goodbye but full of gratitude. From the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the enchanted Galapagos Islands, and now here—where north meets south—we’ve been gifted something priceless: perspective, wonder, and a whole collection of moments we’ll carry with us forever.

Until next time, South America. You’ve been unforgettable.
